Ravanhattha ~ Origin of the Sarangi

The sarangi is said to trace its roots to the Ravanhattha -an ancient bowed instrument once played by wandering saints and storytellers. Over centuries, it evolved, finding its place in India’s courts, temples, and folk traditions. Today, that lineage lives on through Wahid Khan, a third-generation sarangi vadak, whose Sarangi itself is over 200 years old, passed down through his family. Each note he draws carries not only his own voice but also the memory of generations—the sound of an ancient tradition kept alive in wood, gut, and wire.
